USING COOKIES
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
|
You may be asked to accept "cookies" several times in navigating through the
Cathay Pacific CXagentsUSA site. This is a normal function
that our server performs that will
not adversely affect your computer in any way. You can safely set your browser
to accept "cookies" without displaying alerts while visiting our site by
reviewing your browser's support documentation for instructions on how to do so.
Without cookies, you would not be able to use active server pages (i.e.: any
page that ends in ".asp"). When a new session is created, a cookie containing
the session ID is sent/stored on the home machine.
We don't control the sending of this cookie, ASP/our webserver sends it.
Accepting cookies is a tradeoff for the convenience of logging in one time for
the whole site instead of logging in every time you get to a new page.
Here are some frequently asked questions we put together from several sources
and from our own experience:
What are Internet Cookies?
Cookies are a mechanism for browser software to remember something about a web
site. It works as follows: the web site gives the browser some information, and
asks the browser to pass this information back to the web site the next time it
visits the site.
Why are Cookies useful?
Cookies allow a site to personalize itself for you.
For example, in our online booking section the web site could use Cookies to list
the flights you have booked. In an online news service the web
site could use Cookies to list which news categories you are interested in, and
which ones you don't want to be bothered with.
Also, Cookies enable a site to count individual visitors rather than mere page
hits. This allows a site to report "number of users" more accurately, or to
analyze how people navigate the site in order to improve its layout.
Another use is the storage/retrieval of session information to save the visitor
from having to log in to a secure site multiple times. For example, in the
Cathay Pacific Online Booking page, we store your username in a cookie so that you
won't have to type it in when logging back into the site.
What is this "Cookies" file on my disk?
As explained above, your browser is asked to remember some information about a
site. It does this by saving the information, along with the name of the web
site, to a file on your computer. What this file is called, and where it is
stored, depends on your browser. For example, Netscape Navigator for the
Macintosh stores Cookies in a text file called "MagicCookie" which is located in
the Netscape Preferences folder. Netscape Navigator for Windows stores Cookies
in a text file called cookie.txt, in the Netscape Navigator directory. Internet
Explorer stores Cookies in a directory called Cookies in your C:\WINDOWS folder.
The amount of information used by Cookies is limited, and if Cookies aren't used
for a while they are removed.
How do you stop your browser from using Cookies?
Enable the warning as described above and you will be asked by the browser if
you'd like to store a Cookie whenever you arrive at a page that wants to store
one. You will have the opportunity to refuse the use of a Cookie, but this may
result in not being able to use the site to its full potential. Approving some
Cookies, while denying others, within a single web site might result in
unpredictable behavior.

TROUBLE VIEWING PAGES
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
|
If you are experiencing problems viewing the pages of this site it may be
caused by one of the following:
Computer screen size (resolution) too
small - need to scroll left to right
Your computer screen may be set for viewing at a 640x480 size. The Cathay
Pacific site is designed to a three year old screen size standard of 800x600.
To find out what your screen size settings are, click on the <Start> button of the windows program,
<Settings>, <Control Panel>, <Display Icon>, <Settings tab>.
To change the screen size is easy and usually does not require any upgrading. We would recommend that
you consult your technical support staff.
Your Internet Connection has timed out
Some Internet Service Providers (ISP) have their systems set to log you off
if there is no activity on your connection. This is done to save you
the cost of "connected" time and to maximize their access to other customers.
Check with your ISP as to what their settings are and what other options are
available.
Seeing information that does not make sense - Caching
If you are having another persons name or information appear on one of the web pages,
after you log in, complete registration, or
confirm your membership, the page that you are viewing has been cached. Caching
simply means that a copy of the page has been stored on your computer by your
browser. This is a standard feature of many browsers used to speed up the
navigation of previously visited pages.
To ensure that the page you are viewing is always the most current, you will
need to adjust the browser settings to always show the newest version of a page
every time you visit it:
|
|
 |
 |
 |
|
|
Internet Explorer 5.0
|
 |
Netscape 4.7
|
 |
- On the tool bar of your browser select <Tools>
- Select <Internet Options>
- Select the <General> Tab
- In the "Temporary Internet files" section and click <Settings>.
- Click <Every visit to the page> option in the "Check for newer versions
of stored pages" section.
- Click "OK" until all the windows are closed.
- Close any and all browser windows that you have open.
- Open a new browser window and proceed to www.cxagentsusa.com and
try again.
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
- On the tool bar of your browser select <edit>
- Select <Preferences>
- Click the <+> at <Advanced> and a list will open
- Select <Cache>
- Select <Every time> from the list below
"Document in cache is compared to document on network:"
- Click "OK"
- Close any and all open browser windows
- Open a new browser window and proceed to
www.cxagentsusa.com and try again.

Seeing the wrong username in the login box - Cookies
If you are seeing someone else's username in the login text boxes on the home page or on the
login page, the browser is showing the most recently stored data in the cookies for this Cathay
Pacific site.
For convenience to the user the Cathay Pacific site usually has the browser save the user
information of the last person who used the current computer to either register
or log in.
To enter a different username just type over the username and password in the
appropriate boxes and click <go> or <log In>. Once the login process is
complete, your username and if you choose, your password will be saved into the
cookies. The next time you return to the site, your user information will be
displayed (If nobody else uses the same computer to login or register).
Additional Hints
- Ensure that the Javascript option is enabled (see your browser's Options or Preferences).
- Maximize your browser window to view the full width of a page for optimal viewing.
- After an extended period of inactivity (usually 15 minutes) the system may ask you to log in again.
If you experience technical problem using our web site you can
send us a note.
Please note that we can't answer fare, schedule, baggage or any other
airline-related questions. This feedback form is strictly for the reporting of
technical problems using this Cathay Pacific web site.
Given the volume of e-mail inquiries we receive, we can't promise an immediate
answer. However, if you provide us with a detailed message on the question or
problem and it's one that is technical in nature, we'll do our best to assist
you.
Send us a note
